South Africa: “What if I find out I have AIDS?”

Having bumped into Community Outreach Workers as I spent time in the black slums of South Africa, these ladies agreed to test me for AIDS, just as they do with residents.

There was a moment there in the van as I waited for my result when a dark thought crossed my mind:

“What if I find out I have AIDS?” And worst still, it happens live on camera?

But for these ladies, helping South Africa’s poorest people get tested, understand they are HIV positive and act on it is a daily reality.

In South African slum settlements, where no one seems to care, these brave ladies work are a little oasis of compassion, challenging the lost – proving me wrong.
